Meetings
Seems to have been the right time to have left. Now the mandatory meetings take at least 10 hours per week for students in HH. On average on these meetings there are about 20 people, all payed according to BAT2a, which gives you roughly 15.000 Euros as a sheer working cost for these meetings. I might have miscalculated, but still the monitary cost is impressive but much lower than the emotional costs...

... I agree with your statement about the emotional costs but the rest of your calculation is simply wrong. You placed unrealistic restrictions on the time a PhD student should work ... Assuming a working time of 20 hrs/week for a BAT2a/2 contract is as unrealistic as basing this calculation on 40 hrs/week. At 60 to 80 hrs/week we're in a range which would be considered as 'normal'. Of course there are times when things need to get finished (like e.g. always), where everyone has to be prepared to work a bit more than average. If there is a meeting which you need to attend, that doesn't mean that you work less. You just get up earlier and stay longer iin the evening. And now, as long as your contribution to the experiment is below 168 hrs/week I don't want to hear any complaints anymore, did I make myself clear???
